The recent increase in prices for water, electricity and other resources has directly influenced the cost of eating take out. Not to mention that the continual use of disposable plates and containers leads to waste that has a negative impact on our environment. The Office of General Affairs is presenting the “Large Bowl” drive, designed to promote environmental awareness by providing students with a stylish reusable bowl for all of their meals. These bowls will be distributed in the food plazas downstairs in the dormitories on September 16th, 23rd, and 30th. Each purchase over 45 NT will have a 5 NT discount when using these bowls.

Dean of the Office of General Affairs, Shiaw-shyan Luo, expressed, “Tamkang University has close to 20,000 students and many of them eat take out. If they all use disposable cups and plates it will surely leave a significant footprint of carbon waste on our environment. We discovered in an earlier survey that in one weeks time, the number of paper containers used by the university for lunch boxes would stack up to be twice as high as the Taipei 101 building. So we have undertaken dramatic measures since 2008 in order to reduce carbon waste generated from our university. These small steps, policies and adjustments have dramatic effects on our the future of our eco system.”

The large bowl comes dressed in a beautiful flower design with a fastenable lid. It can hold up to 1000 cc of food, making it suitable to hold a large lunch. Founder of the Large Bowl promotion, Ying-hsiu Lai, expressed, “I chose to promote this environmental product in the freshman dormitory in order to let students start their college life with good habits. Not only will this project be effective in reducing carbon waste, it is a fine way to promote awareness to environmental problems as well.”
