The Quanta Culture and Education Foundation held the first Cultural Ambassador event in September and invited international students studying Chinese language from junior colleges and private universities all over Taiwan to participate. The event was an exchange with emphasis on showcasing the culture of Taiwan by giving participants missions to carry out throughout middle schools and high schools all around Taiwan. Each participants had an opportunity to win plane and boat tickets to take a trip around the entire island. Thi Kim Cuc Nguyen, a Tamkang University student of the Department of Chinese language, participated in the event under the encouragement of her instructed and won first place in the competition.

Initially none of the students wanted to participate in the event, but Nguyen’s instructor, Qing-rong Meng, continued to persuade her to take advantage of the opportunity. Eventually Thi Kim Cuc Nguyen summoned up the courage to participate in the cultural event and took first place in the category of creativity. Qing-rong Meng expressed that it was a trying month of convincing Nguyen that she had the capability to do well in the event, but the final outcome was well worth it. She stated, “It is quite an honor to see any of my students achieve such an honor. It’s really quite moving.”

Thi Kim Cuc Nguyen expressed, “I’m a very active girl and I never like to accept defeat. It wasn’t easy for me to come to Taiwan to study, but I had to do everything in my power to make a better future for myself. I’m very blessed to be able to be honored with such an award that recognizes my efforts. But honestly I’m still a little too conservative. I need to be braver and take the chance to meet more people from different countries and cultures. This event really gave me a chance to test my ability and I’m very grateful to my professor for recommending me.”
