For the winter vacation many activities took place and TKU student groups offered services of all kinds all over Taiwan. The services included part time volunteer work, internet instruction and study skills. 11 special students had a much more adventurous time during the winter break as they taught Chinese language for 13 days in Phitsanuloke, Thailand. The course included instruction in typing, conversation, calligraphy and cultural ideas including spring festival and the lunar calendar. One of the student instructors, Gui-zhen Lin, stated, “All of the students learned so diligently. The experience was very rewarding.”

This is the second student service trip made to Thailand by TKU and supervisor of the trip was professor of the Extracurricular Activities Guidance Section, Mei-lan Lee, who stated, “It was so touching to see all of the teaching materials that we brought last year were still in good use. There were Chinese writings on the inside and outside of one of the homes we visited and also in the classrooms. It was very encouraging to see that we are truly making a difference.” Third year student of the Department of International Business, Fan-cao, also made his second trip to Thailand this winter break. He stated, “It was great being back and every hug I received let me know how fortunate I am. When I am in Thailand, I am the purest version of myself.”

There were a few Thai students that were not new to the Chinese language, especially after last year’s service visit. With a few learning basics in place they were able to further increase the knowledge of the village, giving them even more involved study skills for the duration of their trip. The members of the TKU student service club were honored with gifts and souvenirs by the townspeople before their departure. Third year student of the Department of Economics, Yan-ru Liu, stated, “There were tears in my eyes as I left. When they gave us the traditional Chinese clothing that they made themselves, I was overwhelmed with emotion.”
