TKU has been utilizing countless methods in order to meet with the educational needs of a rapidly changing society and culture. The Department of Chemistry has assisted with meeting these needs through the innovative creation of the Chemistry Mobile, a truck that travels all around Taiwan spreading scientific knowledge and equipment to the most remote regions. This truck was created in 2011 and has done shows for middle schools and high schools, covering a distance of 8000 kilometers in 4 years time. That’s approximately ⅕ of the distance around the world. Dean of the College of Science, Bo-cheng Wang, stated, “Due to alumni Ding-chuan Chen’s generous contribution last year, the Chemistry Mobile will continue to run.” He also indicated that he believes that in 16 years the Chemistry Mobile will be able to travel all around the world.
The Chemistry Mobile’s journey began after Spring Festival and it plans to visit 28 middle schools and high schools this year in the region of New Taipei City. On March 5th the schedule was presented at Wan Li Junior High and in attendance was New Taipei City’s Office of Education’s Deputy Director-general, Ya-wen Kung, Dean of the College of Science, Bo-cheng Wang and General-secretary of the Chinese Journal of Chemistry, Ito Chao. During this meaningful and enthusiastic ceremony, everyone was able to observe experiments, performances and scientific knowledge all at once.
Executive Director of Travel Planning for the Chemistry Mobile, Hsien-chang Kao stated, “Taiwan has four very distinct seasons and when we travel around the country, there’s an array of wonderful colors and scenery. Often times our workers are stunned to see how amazing Taiwan truly is. The new paint job of the Chemistry Mobile was inspired by all of the beautiful images in the nature of Taiwan. I hope that this year aside from letting students do experiments and see our magical performances, that they will also take notice of the stunning new art work on the Chemistry Mobile itself.”
