The World Robot Olympiad Council, ESUN Robot Association and Tamkang University jointly held the 2015 World Robot Olympiad Preliminaries on Aug. 22nd and 23rd at the Student Activity Center on Tamsui Campus. The Northern Region incorporated a total of 177 teams, totalling to the participation of over 700 students and teachers. Teams that pass through the initial competition will be qualified to compete in the national semifinals contest. The top teams of the semifinals competition will be selected to represent Taiwan in the final competition, taking place on a global platform..
The competition on Aug. 22nd consisted of the elementary and junior high school student division with themes of Adventuring and Deep Sea Treasure Hunting, and on Aug. 23rd the high school and professional division competed under the theme of Extreme Summits. All of the teams will have two or three members chosen to participate in the Coaching Division, giving participants a chance to prepare for the upcoming challenges. In addition, there will be a surprise rule, which will keep the competitors alert and the competition stimulating.
Director of the Intelligent Automation and Robotics Center and Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ching-chong Wang, expressed, “Today’s competition was comprised of exploration and adventuring, giving the kids a chance to utilize these skills in their robots as they explored the environment. In the category of Deep Sea Treasure Hunting, the robots were given 30 seconds to find and retrieve a pearl submerged in the water. The searching and exploring event consisted of retrieving five different artifacts. All of the events created pressure situations to test the quality of each robot’s capabilities.”
