In his first time participating in the Taihe Cup Martial Arts Championships, fourth year German Studies student, Chiu Zi-hao, competed in two events and clinched bronze medals in both. Chiu practices a Chinese martial art known as Bajiquan. Laughing, he explained that this kind of macho combat sport, where you stand in a ring and swing at your opponent, is not for everyone. “It takes a lot of learning and practice! These days, whether it’s the Bajiquan Club, the Capoeira Club, or any other form of martial art, the main focus is on promoting exercise and sport. Before you can learn to defend yourself and perfect your technique, you have to undergo rigorous physical training.”
