To promote the importance of choosing local Taiwanese rice products, Tamkang University is currently holding a “TKU Rice Festival”.

Why is it so important to consume local rice products?

On the one hand, this shortens the distance your food has to travel before getting to your plate, meaning less transportation, less pollution, and a cleaner environment. On the other hand, it helps to support local farmers and the local economy.

TKU Rice Festival is a month-long event that started at the beginning of November. As part of the festival, ten food shops from around the Tamsui Campus have come up with a range of new rice dishes designed to rouse students’ relish for rice: ‘Barrel Rice Cake’ (which is “sticky rice” cooked in a bamboo barrel), sweet rice porridge, hand-made mochi, and purple rice pudding.

Rice fever has not only spread through ranks of local TKU students, but also attracted many foreign students. Mickey Epand, an international student from America, exclaimed “I never knew rice could be used in such a diverse range of dishes”.
