At 3:10pm on Tues April 10, the Chung-Ling Chemistry Hall was the venue for a special lecture. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Zhou Yuashen, an Academia Sinica Academician and one of the most prominent mathematicians in Taiwan, having previously served as the Director-General of the Institute of Mathematics, Academia Sinica.

The lecture explored the topic of Optimal Stopping, analyzing the optimal time for a person to stop betting in order to maximize their profits. Starting from 1961, Dr. Zhou teamed up with fellow scholar, Herbert Robbins, to publish a series of essays that analyze the conditions necessary to make an ‘optimal stop’. In 1971, Dr. Zhou worked with Robbins and Siegmund to write ‘Great Expectations: the Theory of Optimal Stopping’, which later came to be viewed as the “bible for statisticians”. Ms. Hsieh, from the TKU Department of Mathematics, commented: “we are so fortunate to have this opportunity”.
