Science and Art Come Together in the Carrie Chang Music Hall

Everyone knows that Einstein was able to make such a significant impact on society through his enthusiastic studies in academic knowledge which made an extraordinary contribution to science. Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, Yuan-Tseh Lee, and Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Xingjian Gao, both believe that Science and Humanism shouldn’t be separated. They believe that if you study science without involving the humanistic quality, it is difficult to make any kind of significant breakthrough in research. Then we should ask ourselves, what kind of spark can be created from the combination of art and science?

On December 9th the Carrie Chang Music Hall held an event called, “Night of Science and the Lifting Mysterious Veil”. The students came together in collaboration to utilize their scientific knowledge for a powerful art performance. The Dean of Science, Bo-Cheng Wang, stated, “We especially put together tonight’s event to increase interest of music and art in more scientifically-oriented students and teachers.” Beautiful music rang through the air as 200 invigorated guests filled the auditorium. Also in attendance to encourage students was President Chia-I Chang, Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, and Dean of the College of Engineering, Chii-dong Ho.

The performance began with five members from the physics department singing, “When a man loves a woman.” Afterwards everyone’s breath was taken away by the mysterious magic show that followed. The show continued with a dazzling flag performance and the climax took place when the live band raised pulses. Bo-Cheng Wang, stated, “Here we have performances from both Western and Eastern countries that co-exist much the same way that science and humanism does. They are always happening at the same time and they are always enjoyable if you are paying attention.”
