EU Winter School 2014

On January 20th the Graduate Institute of European Studies held the 2014 EU Winter School program with this year’s theme of “The World of Russia, the European Union and Asia.” The nation’s experts of European knowledge have been invited to instruct classes that introduce European social humanities with an emphasis on the relationship between Russia and its interaction with the world. This is a golden opportunity for junior college students to learn about the economic resources and culture of the European Union first hand.

In attendance for the ceremony of the EU Winter School program was Tamkang University’s Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, Dean of the Graduate Institute of European Studies, Chiu-ching Kuo, Legislator and Alumni of the Graduate Institute of European Studies, Chih-wei Chiu, Overseas Ambassador Jong-nan Chiou and many professors from the Graduate Institute of European Studies. Wan-chin Tai expressed during his speech, “The Graduate Institute of European Studies is the number one international research institute in Taiwan. It has cultivated many esteemed graduates from the academic world to international diplomacy. There have been a lot of extremely successful alumni such as Chih-wei Chiu and in this generation of globalization it is our desire to use more diversified methods of education to give students of the Department of International Affairs.”

The 2014 EU Winter School has 67 members in total which is double that of the members last year. The members comes from various institutes including National Taipei University, Fu Jen Catholic University, Da Yeh University, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, ROC National Defense University, National Taiwan Normal University and Taipei Tech. Students have come from all over the nation to take courses such as Cultural Appreciation of Tamsui, Portuguese, Spanish, the History of England and Holland, the Culture of European Wine, European Fashion, Advanced European Studies, The Welfare of Modern Europe, Middle Eastern European Countries, Human Rights, International Law and Politics, etc. First year student of the Graduate Institute of European Studies, Yu-zhen Fan, stated, “I’m so happy I could sign up for this class. In the first lesson Ambassador Jong-nan Chiou taught us about European etiquette. I learned so many interesting things that I will implement in my daily life.”
