The College of Science’s “Bright Light Science Service Team” sacrificed their winter vacation to compile a curriculum for junior high school students in southern Taiwan. Bo-cheng Wang, Dean of the College of Sciences, lead a group of eight diligent students to Tainan Liu Ying Junior High School to create an academic curriculum that would stimulate student interest in the fields of physics, mathematics, chemistry and astronomy. The service team took the initiative to plan, design, and lay out science courses that could help the younger students develop their understanding in related areas.

Captain of the the Bright Light Science Team and four-year student of the Department of Physics, Guan-zhi Wang, stated, “Even though this the first trip our group has taken to the country it was extremely successful. Because of the many science camps, competitions and activities we were lacking funds needed to make this trip possible. However due to the support of Bo-cheng Wang and his fund-raising abilities, this trip was able to come into fruition. Bo-cheng Wang stated, “The students have been very passionate about spreading their services around Taiwan. Their expertise will definitely be a great contribution to our society and it will make their university experience even more meaningful. It also sets an example for other academic institutes to utilize their educational resources for the greater good.”

The four-day event gave middle schools students the opportunity to learn topics such as etag, 3D glasses and detailed chemistry experiments. Mathematics was taught by allowing students to participate in a game that revolved around global investments. They also received the basic knowledge and principles of Astronomy. The entire curriculum utilized games and competitions to get students excited about education. Not only was the educational event successful, it will be a lasting memory for the students of Liu Ying Junior High School.

One of the students of Liu Ying Junior High School, Shi-yu Wang, stated, “In four days we were able to learn a lot. It was more than just knowledge, we learned how to work together in different ways. I really enjoyed the Astronomy class. I’m grateful to the Bright Light Science Service Team for taking this winter break to spend time teaching us.” Guan-zhi Wang expressed, “It’s amazing to see how much information these children were able to absorb in such a short time. Here in the country they never have an opportunity to come in contact with these types of science activities. While we were playing the learning games, I could see that their interests in science was increased significantly. It made the entire trip feel very rewarding and worthwhile.”
