The Ninth Annual Chung Ling Chemistry Competition Takes Place On Tamkang Campus

The Tamkang University Chung Ling Chemistry competition is known by high schools as the “Chemistry Olympics.” On March 8th this event took place on Tamkang Campus for the 9th time. The Department of Chemistry always gives public praise to the winner based on a carefully designed written examination and innovate research experiments. The competition attracts students from famous schools all over the nation including Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, Taipei First Girls High School, National Taichung First Senior High School and so forth. There were even students from Mainland China, Jinmen, Magong adding to an overall total of 210 teams and 630 students, making for an exciting action-packed competition.

Dean of the Department of Chemistry, Jyh-shing Lin, stated, “The Chung Ling Chemistry Competition’s reputation has travelled far and wide, bringing Mainland Chinese Xiamen University’s Chemistry leaders and professors to observe the competition in order to absorb experience for the first time. The theme for this year’s competition was focused on looking for a surge of new innovation and creativity. The written examination tested the basic chemistry understanding of key crucial concepts including reasoning information, calculation ability and the ability to apply learned academic knowledge. The participants that passed the first part of the competition were able to enter into the second phase of innovative experiments. This portion of the competition was not divided into levels or schools as the students were asked to design an experiment according to the required guidelines within the time-limit of three hours.

After the written exam took place, 28 groups were selected to enter the final phase of the competition with 5 different themes: Organic Compounds, Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography, Fischer Esterification Reaction, Properties of Alkanes and Ion Implantation. All of the participants received a certificate for this year’s competition. First place winner received 30,000 NT, second place received 15,000 and third place received 10,000 NT. Dean of the College of Science, Bo-cheng Wang, stated, “This year we have attracted many schools from all over the nation and it gives students and teachers a great opportunity to learn and cooperate together.”
