Watching a movie seems simple enough, but how does someone enjoy a film when they’ve lost their sight? On May 13th on Tamsui Campus in B713 a film created by the Department of Mass Communication was played for the vision-impaired. The film was a specially designed documentary called “After the Night.” The audience was filled with over 200 individuals made up of both visually-impaired and visually-capable participants who enjoyed listening to the film together.

The Producer of the film, Ya-ching Zhan, expressed, “The story involves a group of five visually-impaired female friends that travel around Taiwan enjoying different activities such as baseball, running, work and socializing. They were faced with their personal challenges and had to be brave enough to overcome them. As we came to the end of designing the film we were faced with another challenge: How do we let the actors see their film?”

After doing a bit of research, the producer contacted speaker Ying-xiong Huang and You-ru Li who have offered descriptive video services for over 1000 movies. You-ru Li stated, “Traveling around Taiwan to help with this documentary was a very unique experience.” Producer Ya-ching Zhan gave the two video description specialists a special thanks for their contribution to the film.” Film critiques from the Huashan 1914 Creative Park called “After the Night” powerful, moving and a good time.
