You may have noticed in recent days some of the administrators and secretaries wearing a black band around their wrist. Fashion is continually bringing a new look to all places whether it’s at the mall or even on campus, but this campus trend is more than just aesthetically pleasing. These bracelets possess the latest software smartphone technology app that keeps track of your steps, walking pace and exercise habits. The directors of the various departments have promoted this program titled “Shining Steps” which utilizes these devices as a means to improve the campuses fitness culture by calculating your every step.

Director of the Office of Physical Education, Shu-feng Hsiao, expressed, “This Shining Steps activity has already created a new trend. Lots of people are counting their steps and adding more friends into their “walking circles”, measuring their daily exercise habits. This fun and meaningful activity has been implemented in order to sustain and develop a healthy lifestyle for faculty. This also serves as a good warm up for the 66th anniversary sports events coming up. We are beginning this program by first introducing it to the first and second level administrators and secretaries, but later we will introduce it to other university members.” Participants merely need to download the app on their smartphone and their walking progress will be monitored and placed in categories with various challenges. A special ceremony was held on Sept. 22 to launch this fitness activity.

The program time will go from Sept. 21, 2015 until Jan. 11, 2016. Participants are required to report their progress every Monday before noon. Participants will also be required to give a security deposit of 500 NT for the bracelet. Director of the Department of Diplomacy and International Relations, Chin-mo Cheng, expressed that he and his wife were TKU alumni. “Thirty years ago I gave my wife a bracelet fashioned in Taiwanese native style. Thirty years later the university has provided us with bracelets to help us not neglect the importance of our health.” Every weekend he returns to the countryside farm so taking a million steps should be an easy task for him.
