The four major needs of life are food, clothing, lodging and transportation. Unfortunately some of our needs can also bring along many dangers. When we turn on the TV, the news almost always has a story regarding car wrecks or other vehicular accidents. The Ministry of Communications has calculated that in the year 2014 there were 271 deaths of people between ages 18 to 24, 218 of which, were related to automobile accidents. This illustrates that traffic accidents are responsible for more than 80 percent of deaths in young adults in Taiwan.

To reduce these numbers, students have been encouraged to partake in the safe and convenient public transportation system. The Office of General Affairs has recently promoted the Bus Ride iPhone 6S Lotto to help with the decline of traffic fatalities. Registration for the program for students took place from Oct. 20 to November 6 ( http://enroll.tku.edu.tw) and students are required to fill out an application form with basic information for a Yoyo Card. All students who registered during this time were automatically entered into the iPhone 6S Lotto, for a chance to win an IPhone 6S, iPad Air2 Wifi, Beats Studio Wireless Headphones, Garmin Vivofit Fitness Bracelet, .48L One Touch unrustable thermo mug. Buses that are participating in the lotto include Red 27, Red 28, 308, and 756.

Director of the Office of General Affairs, Shiaw-shyan Luo, expressed that Taiwan had over 1,800 vehicular fatalities and that 1000 of them were incidents involving scooters. This new policy titled, “Buses On Campus” will add more buses, making it much more convenient for everyone to arrive to school safely, hopefully decreasing traffic related deaths.
