The Ministry of Education (MOE) has specially designated the Award for Excellence in Schools in recognition of efforts to promote groups and individuals with specific achievements in school sports to reward the promotion of colleges with outstanding contributions in the areas of physical education and research, activities and competition, and administration and services. Applications for the award are to be submitted prior to the end of June each year for both the preliminary and final selections. TKU participated in the award selection for the first time in 2009, and the recognition of the MOE this year gave all TKU students and teachers a sense of honor and glory. President Flora Chia-I Chang received the award at the International Conference Hall of the National Taiwan Library on Monday, September 9th, at 2pm. The many TKU department heads, teachers and administrative personnel from the Office of Physical Education, and student delegations that went to the hall to observe the ceremony, made this the most notable of award events ever at the venue.

The selection committee confirmed that the TKU curriculum and teaching methodology relies mainly on the learning of motor skills and physical activities. By integrating physical fitness concepts into courses and with the implementation of an eight-week swimming class, physical education (P.E.) courses have been classified as three-year compulsory classes, and achievements in P.E. studies are requirements for graduation. During the first semester from 2009 to 2012, 133 works were published by full-time intramural P.E. teachers. In addition, the academic sports journal publication “Tamkang Sports” is sent to the National Library collection. A number of sports activities and competitions both on and off campus are conducted, including intercollegiate competitions such as the School Games, the School Ball Games Open Competition, the School Water Sports, and the President’s Cup for Basketball, Volleyball and Softball. Student sports teams have participated in the National College Games, winning six gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals in 2013, placing 12th out of a total of 170 colleges and universities. There are a total of 35 school sports teams in the categories of ball games, martial arts, water sports and land sports, with each team employing full-time coaches and team captains. TKU is also actively involved in a number of international sports exchanges, including with the University of Macao table tennis team, the kendo team of Chuo University in Japan, the Chinese University of Hong Kong women’s tennis team, Renmin University of China’s sports team, the bowling team of Nagoya Sangyo University in Japan, and so forth.

TKU Office of Physical Education Director Hsiao Shu-Feng said that her office works hard to promote the faculty and students at the school and sporting activities both on and off campus for all to see. The many schools participating in the selection this year have all distinguished themselves. Director Hsiao gave special thanks to the school units for their support, and in the future her office will continue the goal of promoting sports and a Lohas healthy campus.

President Chang expressed her appreciation in an interview with the “Tamkang Times” for the recognition given the P.E. efforts at TKU by the MOE. The school’s P.E. curriculum is rich and varied and integrated with a down-to-earth, stalwart spirit. Especially, the three-year compulsory P.E. requirement arrangement and the criteria established for swimming eligibility, in addition to acquiring skills through sports, allows students to enjoy the benefits of exercise and fun. The president said, “Winning the distinction this time, and tying with National Taiwan University as the only two National Sports Excellence schools, is the result of long-term promotion by the colleagues and teachers of the Office of Physical Education.” In the future the office will continue to expand sports activities and enhance participation by the school’s students and teachers.
