When most of us hear the word “comic” we are brought back to our childhood memories of Doraemon, Black Jack and Sanpei the Fisherboy. We have always enjoyed the splendor and excitement of the different characters with dramatic expressions as the artist unveils a fascinating story.

On October 25th, on campus in building B302A a comic convention was held by the Akita Museum of Comic Art, to collect 15 original manuscripts from Taiwanese comic artists which will be presented at a special exhibition. This event is titled as “Interviews With Elderly Taiwanese Comic Book Artists” and is designed to promote the interest in comic art for Taiwanese youth while keeping a record for future generations.

Ming-Hao Ma, assistant professor in the Chinese Language department, stated,” At current Taiwan doesn’t really emphasize comic style art. In fact, the interest in this type of artwork is slowly withering away.” In addition to the original manuscripts were also recorded interviews in an attempt to preserve this Taiwanese heritage. So far they have already got recorded interviews from Mao-Song Xu, Jian-Feng Tang, De-Lin Hong, Jun-Yan Cao and Ming-Kun Liu.

In charge of promoting the comic exchange is Hong-Qi Zhu, who stated,”This event is a wonderful opportunity to preserve the work of many of these great artists. Unfortunately a lot of these artists have already passed away without leaving any of their original manuscripts behind. Although though are countless new Taiwanese artists, they don’t get very much exposure. So the world pays very little attention to the comic art here. Events like these can really change the face of Taiwan and make sure that these great treasures are never forgotten.”
