Dean of the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, Ben-hang Chang, received recognition for his astounding investment in traditional calligraphy on May 5th at the 55th annual Literary Art Festival. He was personally presented the “Annual Chinese Art and Literature Prize” from Vice President Den-yih Wu. Ben-hang Chang expressed, “I’ve already been promoting traditional Chinese calligraphy for many years, it is so rewarding to receive this achievement. I anticipate that in the future this part of our heritage can be passed and developed both nationally and internationally. I hope the Ministry of Education is successful in implementing Chinese calligraphy in the elementary and middle schools as required curriculum.”

The Chinese and Literature Prize was established by the Chinese Writer’s and Artist’s Association and is grand honor to be selected for the prize. Due to Ben-hang Chang’s amazing commitment, this year he has been honored with this award for the second time. He also received this award on the 39th annual Literary Art Festival. This reward is typically a lifetime achievement and receiving it two times says more about the fiber of Ben-hang Chang’s diligence than words ever could.

Professor Ben-hang Chang’s courses at Tamkang University continue to be one of the most popular courses. The waiting list for his class is so difficult to get in that many students go four years without ever getting a seat in the course. The class has changed with the aid of technology and students are able to learn through the digital e-calligraphy program. This let’s students practice writing continually on computer software and they can iron out their mistakes before ever writing anything in ink.
