The 1st Northern Taiwan History Department Symposium was held May 11, 2019, at the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Hall, Tamsui Campus. The event was held jointly by the history departments of four universities in northern Taiwan, members of the Excellent Long-Established University Consortium of Taiwan (ELECT): Tamkang University, Soochow University, the Chinese Culture University, and Fu Jen Catholic University. It was organized by students from the Department of History, TKU College of Liberal Arts, who incorporated the features of each history department to create a forum for exchange and interaction. In the age of global competition, it is only through this kind of mutual cooperation and integration of resources that the Taiwanese education sector can offer students new perspectives, provide them with a broader space for learning, and enhance their future competitiveness.

During the event’s Opening Ceremony, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Chen-Jung Lin, delivered an opening address in which she thanked the faculty, students, and supervisors from the four cooperating universities for their participation. She noted that the Symposium was entirely the idea of the students, and explained that “pro-active learning” has already emerged as a major development trend for higher education. “Quite clearly,” she added, “the students have already taken the first step on the path to pro-active learning.”
