The TKU Foreign Languages Summer Camp

From Aug 23-25, a summer camp was held at TKU's Tamsui Campus. The original blueprint for the camp was devised by the Ministry of Education, which then authorized a handful of colleges around Taiwan to organize the camps. One of these colleges was TKU's College of Foreign Languages and Literature. Over 80 students from several universities in northern Taiwan took part in the camp, and were divided into four separate groups based on their language preferences - Japanese, French, German, and Spanish. The chief organizer of the camp and College Dean, Dr. Lucia Chen, commented: a foreign language is like a key; it opens doors internationally, allowing students access to various lucrative careers, in the fields of diplomacy, business, and so on. During the camp, students not only attended language classes, but also tried their hands at various fun activities. The TKU Department of Spanish, for example, organized a rumba dancing activity, and, during class, held a "Flamingo Dance Party". The Department of French, for their part, guided students on a tour of Tamsui "Old Street" and Fort San Domingo, where students practiced using French to introduce the various famous sights and scenes of Tamsui.
The 2016 TKU Overseas Internship Program

Traditionally, overseas internship programs have emphasized the need for students to gain practical part-time work experience. However, the internship program established by the TKU Department of Diplomacy and International Relations is different. Held this year from July 24-Aug 22, the course placed an onus instead on helping students train and develop professional work skills. The internship program was held in Prague, Czech Republic, and entailed practical training and work experience designed to provide students with real-world opportunities to put theoretical knowledge into practice. As part of the program, students participated in discussion-style classes, attended lectures, delivered presentations, and visited various local enterprises. Cheng Chieh Yun, a student who took part in the internship program, said that she learned a lot from the event. Not only was she immersed in the beauty of Prague, with its myriad cultural and historical attractions, but she also gained practical training and experience in the area of international diplomacy.
2016-17 Orientation for New Department Chairs

On Aug 10 and 11, senior level staff convened at the Lanyang Campus take part in the 2016-17 Orientation for New Department Chairs. The event, which was organized by the Office of Human Resources, featured performance reports from the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Human Resources, and experience-sharing speeches from long-serving deans and department chairs, including the Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Dian-Fu Chang, and the Chair of the Department of Economics, Dr. Cheng Tun-Kung. The orientation also involved keynote speeches by the Executive Director of the TKU Center for Learning and Teaching, Pan Hui-ling, who spoke on the topic of ‘Leadership Philosophy and Communication Skills’, and the Dean of the College of Languages and Literature, Dr. Lucia Chen, who talked about ‘Leadership and Management of Groups’. Through an exchange of ideas and experience-sharing speeches, the orientation event furnishes a platform for newly-appointed heads of departments to gain a handle on their new positions in as little time as possible.
The 2016 File Preservation Exhibition

In a collaborative effort with the ROC Ministry of Education, National Taiwan University recently invited 56 national (public) and private universities from around Taiwan to partake in the 2016 File Preservation Exhibition. Held from Aug 5 - Oct 31 at the NTU History Museum, Taipei, the exhibition aims to promote the importance of preserving files and images as a means of celebrating and remembering the evolution of Taiwan's tertiary institutions. Tamkang University was among the private universities invited to take part in the exhibition. Moreover, the President of TKU, Dr. Chia-I Chang, was asked to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony on behalf of Taiwan's private universities. In her speech, President Chang affirmed the significance of preserving educational files and called for closer exchange and interaction between colleges in sharing successful administrative practices and maintaining university files.
Passing the Baton - a New Era of Leadership

On the morning of Aug 1, Tamkang University held the 2016-17 General Handover Ceremony to farewell outgoing department chairs and section chiefs, and welcome the senior staff members who will fill their roles. A total of 29 high-level staff and faculty members will vacate their positions, many of whom will retire. TKU President, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, in her opening remarks at the Handover Ceremony, expressed her gratitude to the outgoing staff members for their hard work and sacrifice over the years. One of the senior staff who will soon leave Tamkang, the TKU Secretary-General, Dr. Hsu Ting-Chi, delivered a speech thanking President Chang for giving him the chance to serve as secretary-general and thus allowing him to learn a great deal about school administration, particularly quality control.
The 2016 Youth Micro Movie Camp

From July 21-24, the Department of Mass Communication jointly held the 2016 Youth Micro Movie Camp. Two other organizations helped plan and coordinate the event: the Taiwan Mobile Foundation and the Taiwan Public Television Service. The Camp extended for four days and three nights. During the camp, professional directors guided students in various skills, from group collaboration and brainstorming, to writing scripts, filming techniques, editing, and then completing a riveting short film with little more than a smart phone.
An Historic Collaboration Between Tamkang and ACCA

Given the importance of globalization in today's workplace, enterprises now hope to attract personnel who have the versatility and skills required to work anywhere in the world. To equip TKU graduates with such skills, the Tamkang University Department of Accounting has been working with accreditation agencies globally, and thus TKU recently became the first university in Taiwan to receive accreditation from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). To recognize this groundbreaking agreement, delegates from Tamkang University and ACCA met on the morning of July 18 at the British Council Teaching Center in Taipei to sign a memorandum of understanding, codifying the relationship between the two institutions. In attendance to witness the historic signing were various senior members from each institution, including the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, a representative from the British Office in Taipei, Mr. Chris Wood, and the Chair of the British Council, Ms. Susana Galvan.
President Chang Voted Director of CEMA

On July 15, the Chinese Excellent Management Association (CEMA) held its annual membership conference and selected new members to serve as members and chairs of the board of supervisors. One of the distinguished members of CEMA is the President of Tamkang University, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang. During the conference, members took a vote and elected President Chang to serve as the President of CEMA for the coming year. Two vice-presidents were also elected: Chen Hsing Shih, the CEO of GMTC, and Wu Tsong Bao, the Chairman of the Board of Protech Systems. Under President Chang's leadership, CEMA will strengthen its ties across various fields, increase collaboration between academia and business, and draw on her extensive resources in the domain of academia to initiate practical programs that benefit society as a whole.
The Wind Engineering Exhibition in Taipei

In the movie classic Armour of God II: Operation Condor, a young Jacky Chan swirls around in an aviation wind tunnel, while at the same time bravely restraining two bad guys. Last year, Typhoon Soudelor buffeted the Taipei Dome Complex, ripped off its rooftop, and left its interior exposed. Two nearby mailboxes were struck by shop signs and bent sideways. The power of wind to affect our lives is alarming. This year, typhoon season has already begun. With a skyline marked heavily by tall buildings, Taiwan relies heavily on wind tunnel experimentation to ensure the safety of these skyscrapers. To help further promote research in this essential area, on July 16 and 17 at the Songshan Cultural Park, Taipei, a Wind Engineering Exhibition was held jointly by TKU's Wind Engineering Center, along with Cheetah Industrial Aero Dyna Ltd and the Chinese Taiwan Association for Wind Engineering. The purpose of the exhibition was to introduce and explain recent experiments made in the field, to promote sharing of information and expertise among local engineers and architects, and to increase the general public's knowledge in this technical field of expertise.
TKU Clubs Embark on Summer Volunteer Programs

TKU’s ‘Three Circles and Five Disciplines’ of education is realized through a three-fold curriculum of professional courses, general courses, and extracurricular activities, the latter of which allows students to learn, provide services, and build expertise by partaking in practical activities that benefit the community, both locally and internationally. This is why Tamkang University places such a strong emphasis on extracurricular club and society activities. In the summer holidays of 2016, 17 TKU clubs and societies - a total of 260 students - took part in summer vacation social service volunteer work, including the TKU Fencing Club, which visited a local elementary school to teach children how to fence and promote the importance of exercise. The 17 TKU clubs went to various rural and remote regions of Taiwan, as well as overseas, bringing with them warmth, a dedication to service, and a passion for learning. Chun-Hung Lin, the TKU Dean of Academic Affairs, noted that the number of TKU clubs participating in the summer volunteer work grows each year, which adds to the vitality of Tamkang’s extracurricular curriculum. “I’m so touched by their dedication and commitment!” he stated.
Modern Study Method Renovation in TKU Library

The modern generation of students have an increasing the need for diversified study and research methods. Their time spent in the library to gather data has been fundamentally changed by increasingly updating technology and innovative concepts. For this reason, in recent years universities around the world have begun designing areas called information commons, which combine the function of research and socializing for purposes of academic discussion. Even though the new area includes spaces for independent study, it also allows for cooperative interaction and professional resources and guidance. The Chueh-sheng Memorial Library will be opening an area on the third floor that will allow students to partake in the information commons experience consisting of study, discussion, research and resting areas for students. Director of the Chueh-sheng Memorial Library, Sheue-fang Song, expressed, “I have always attempted to add to what the previous 2 administrators began within the last 20 years. This has been the inspiration for planning and design for the library from 2014-2016. The first floor has been developed into a 24 hour study area with themes of cultural learning, the second floor utilizes the RFID card catalogue that emphasizes technological applications in fashion of a smart room. The third floor is the Information Commons area combined with three other sections: Student Success, Learning Commons and Research Commons.” Organizer of the third floor renovations is director of the Reference and Information Services Section, Su-jung Chang, who pointed out, “The third floor originally consisted of classical literature and Western literature references. Now it’s been changed into a diversified learning area with technological facilities that provides modern methods of study.”
Flag Ceremony for Students Going Abroad for Study

Universities all over the world are putting emphasis on their strategy of international development. Students being sent overseas for study is now quite common for every type of academic institution. This year America has sent more than 200,000 students abroad for study with hopes of creating personnel that have a greater understanding of life in every country. Tamkang University is no exception when it comes to international development. It began sending junior-year students overseas starting from 23 years ago, totalling to 6,432 students that have gained international skills for the career world. For the 2015-16 academic year, Tamkang University will be sending 520 students to 82 academic institutions of 17 different countries. On June 21 a flag ceremony was held as students of this year’s international exchange programs prepare to travel overseas. Addresses and best wishes were given by President Flora Chia-I Chang, Yuri Yao-tsung Chih of the Ministry of Education, Liang-yu Wang of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diplomatic Consultant of the American Institute in Taiwan, Hiram Rios-Hermandez and Deputy Director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, Charmaine Stanley. President Chang expressed, “This university was founded with the objectives of realizing an internationally-oriented, information-oriented and future-oriented education system. In 1993 the Junior Year Study Abroad Program was established to meet with the objectives of this institution.” She expressed that students that study overseas create new pathways, and obtain cross-cultural knowledge and skills of adaptability that make them very competitive in their future careers.

On Jun 14 the Office of Human Resources held the “2015-16 Second Semester Retiree Tea Party” in the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall. This event marked the retirement of 14 university members: Secretary Ting-chi Hsu, Professor of the Department of Chinese, Ching-huang Chen, Professor of the Department of Mathematics, Bit-shun Tam, Professor of the Department of Chemistry, Huey-chuen Kao, Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, Chii-meng Cheng, Professor of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Ching-shung Chen, Professor of the Department of Industrial Economics, Ming-wen Hu, Professor of the Department of Accounting, Cheng-li Huang, Professor of the Department of Management Sciences, Horng-jinh Chang, Professor of the Department of Russian, Alexander Pisarev, Professor of the Graduate Institute of Strategic Studies, Chun-shan Chao, Professor of the Graduate Institute of Curriculum and Instruction, Chia-cheng Yu, Security of the Division of Safety, Wen-li Deng and Secretary of the Office of International and Cross Strait Affairs, Shu-min Kuo. President Flora Chia-I Chang presented the retirees generous souvenirs as she gave an address. She expressed, “Ten years ago it was usually one or two elderly members of our university retiring. This year we have so many important coworkers bidding farewell. You will all be dearly missed and I thank you so much for your great contribution. TKU and TECO Academic-Industry Agreement

In order to give students of Tamkang University a running start into the career world and an edge over the competition at their future careers, TKU and TECO have spent a long time creating an academic-industry plan of cooperation. A ceremony was held on Jun. 14. As President Flora Chia-I Chang and President of TECO, Theodore M.H. Huang, observed the official initiation of a diverse interdepartmental academic-industry program. The plan includes quick study courses and development of international and management skills. Students will be able to walk out of the doors of graduation already prepared and set to go. Promoter of this academic-industry program and Director of the Office of Research and Development, Bo-chang Wang, expressed, “The content of this agreement states that in the future TECO will work with different departments to help students obtain critical skills. In terms of human resources, the agreement includes the College of Global Development, Foreign Languages and Literature, Business Management and Engineering. Internship programs are in place that will allow participants to be involved in a holistic system of learning that emphasizes international, technological and future-oriented methods of development.
A Night of Celebration and Song

The Female Faculty Association held the “Tamkang Night of Flower Month” in the Carrie Chang Music Hall on Jun. 6. The event consisted of members of the Female Faculty Association performing over 20 beautiful songs in the name of charity. Invited was President Flora Chia-I Chang, Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Literature, Hsiao-chuan Chen, Dean of the College of International Studies, Kao-cheng Wang, Dean of the College of Global Development, Ay-hwa Andy Liou, Dean of Academic Affairs, Tung-wen Cheng, Dean of Student Affairs, Chun-hung Lin, Dean of General Affairs, Shiaw-shyan Luo and the Tamkang University student choir. An honored guest, President of Chung-ang University of Korea, Dr. Chang-soo Kim, joined the exciting performance, singing two songs with the choir. President of the Female Faculty Association and Director of the Office of Physical Education, Shu-hsiao Feng, expressed, “Even though my field of expertise is exercise, it’s important to express life through voice, love and music. This is why I founded the TKU Female Faculty Association Choir.” The performance included a total of 26 songs that utilized sweet sounds, humor and cultural dance to invigorate the audience. President Chang even described the meaning and history of some of the songs to allow the listeners to enjoy mental imagery along with the relaxing harmony.
2015-16 TKU Graduation Ceremony

On June 5 (Sunday) Tamkang University held the 2015-16 graduation ceremony in the Shao-mo Memorial Gymnasium. President Flora Chia-I Chang hosted the event as other special guests attended including President of Chung-ang University of Korea, Chang-soo Kim, Alumni and Director of the Board of TKU Alumni Association, Ding-chuan Chen, Ambassador of Tuvalu, Minute Alapati Taupua, Former TKU Presidents Yea-hong Chen, Yun-shan Lin and Horng-jinh Chang along with directors and professors of all departments. This year’s graduating students totalled to around 7,200, including 428 international students from 53 countries. The ceremony began with the traditional final campus tour as students marched around campus viewing sites for the last time as students. When they arrived to the gymnasium, the senior students played a documentary film that captured unforgettable moments of the year, followed by a music video and live dance performance. During President Chang’s address, she encouraged students to pass the principles and spirit of TKU into their lives and future careers. She also described the TKU educational foundation, which includes an internationally oriented, information-oriented and future-oriented academic program that consists of qualities such as good-conduct, wisdom, physically-fitness, teamwork and beauty. Ding-chuan Chen presented special awards to Yu-pei Ma of the Department of Mass Communication, Han-ming Wu of the Department of Mathematics, Yi-ren Wang of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Sheng-xiong Zhang of the Department of International Business Management, Yu-jun Lin of the Department of Accounting and Jing-yin Xie of the Department of English. Students Rui-tian Wu, Ming-shao Wang, Yan-ling Chen and Yue-kuang Chen, performed the song “You Raise Me Up.” The environment was beautifully decorated as many students gave flowers to their professors for their dedication and knowledge.
Lanyang Campus 2015-16 Graduation Ceremony

On Jun. 4 Lanyang Campus held its 8th graduation ceremony at the Shao-mo Memorial Activity Center with a total of 232 graduating students, including 26 international students from 17 countries. The event was hosted by President Flora Chia-I Chang and included honored guests: Ambassador of the Republic of Kiribati, Teekoa Luta, Ambassador of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Frederick Muller, Ambassador of the Republic of Nauru, Ludwig Dowong Keke, Ambassador of the Republic of Nicaragua, William M. Tapia, Ambassador of the Republic of Palau, Dilmei Louisa Olkeriil, Ambassador of Saint Lucia, Hubert Emmanuel and Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, Antonio Quintas Do Espirito Santo. In President Chang’s address she focused on the special attributes of Lanyang Campus including the English instruction programs, study abroad programs and the residential college, remarking on how these three properties play crucial roles in the development successful students. She then encouraged graduating students to take the founding ideologies of Tamkang University, being the Three Circles (professional, core and extracurricular) and Five Disciplines (conduct, intelligence, physical education, teamwork and beauty) and absorb it into their lives for a prosperous future. Ambassador William M. Tapia, expressed a special thanks to the international students, encouraging them to take the knowledge back to their countries for development and to create an international bridge of cooperation. Special awards were then presented to students for remarkable performance including an international award, leadership award, academic credit award and outstanding performance award.
Students Teach and Teachers Study

The Center for Learning and Teaching held the “Good Study and Share Week” from May 23 to 27 at the Black Swan Exhibition Hall. The event was designed to allow teachers and students to experience a study center with the reversal of the positions of learning and teaching while displaying achievements of this new-age academic study method. Students and teachers were able to observe the success of the program in three themes: My Teacher is Different, My Learning is Different and My Teaching is Different. Executive Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching, Hui-ling Pan, expressed, “Under the revolutionary wave of education for the 21st century, methods of learning are changing all over the world. Evidence of effective learning has the roles of studying and teaching slowly reversing. In order to stay on page with the international world, the Center for Learning and Teaching is adopting this concept to restructure the culture of academics in Taiwan. Flipped classrooms, long-distance learning and student independent learning are all parts of this week’s display, giving observers a chance to peer into the future of academics.” The forum consisted of various parts of new academic learning: voice, my teacher is different, self study, my learning is different, make an appointment with new self, the experience corner, software self-study and the reflection corner. Each area shared unique aspects of the exciting new learning styles, which allowed students and teachers to learn through practical interaction. In short, the teachers would challenge the students with ideas and concepts then have students explain the lesson after given time for research.
Breaking the Boundaries of Learning

Faced with issues of a baby-bust and aging-generation, in addition to the increase of international academic competition, private universities in Taiwan must ally together to pool resources and meet with the increasing challenges of Taiwan’s modern society. This unification will also increase student study options, versatility and adaptability. Tamkang University, Chinese Culture University, Shih Hsin University, Soochow University, Ming Chuan University, Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei Medical University Hospital and Shih Chien University formally signed the U9 League agreement on May 24, initiating a cross-campus, cross departmental cooperation. President Flora Chia-I Chang expressed, “All participating universities are over 50 years old with a variety of fields of study including science, business, farming, medical, media, foreign language, social studies, education, environmental studies, art and design. Each school has its speciality that will allow us to develop a more abundant form of education through cooperation, exchanges and interaction. This rich educational platform ensures that future alumni of universities of the U9 League will become powerful personnel of the future career world.” In the future, students of the U9 League will not have restrictions related to their field of study or campus. For example a student studying law at Soochow University can also major in food management at Shih Chien University. The nine institutions will also promote international study allowing students to take part in international courses. TKU Alumni Gives Back in Big Way

A young boy from the back of the mountains of Tai Tung, Wei-been Yu, was the first in his family to graduate from a university. 20 years later, the Tamkang University alumni became founder and president of the board of the best semi-conductor verification industry in Asia: Integrated Service Technology (IST), worth more than 5,000,000,000 NT. On May 24 in the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall a ceremony was held honoring President Yu’s generous donation of a Dual-beam FIB (focused Ion Beam) to the university, worth over 10,000,000 NT. FIB is a technique used particularly in the semiconductor industry for site-specific analysis, deposition, and ablation of materials. President Flora Chia-I Chang expressed, “Originally students had to use TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) for analysis and this Dual-beam FIB will make things considerably more convenient for research purposes. We are very grateful to IST for their contribution to stop global warming. We want to give more to our students than just academic skills. It’s my wish that they use their knowledge to make the world a better and safer place.” President Yu expressed, “I was just an ordinary boy from Tai-tung and the first time I had ever been on a train, it was to come to TKU for study. All of the fundamentals gathered to create IST came from this university. For this reason, I am pleased to show my gratitude and support for the future of this excellent institution.”
College of Liberal Arts Showcases Culture of Tamsui

Teachers and students of Tamkang University’s College of Liberal Arts have explored into the abundant history, culture and beauty of the Tamsui region and shared their findings via video documentary to showcase the one-of-a-kind landscape. 8 documentaries were filmed and featured at the Sanzhi District Office New Taipei City for the “4th Tamsui Documentary Achievement Exhibition” on May 21 (Sat). Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Sinn-cheng Lin, expressed, “The objective of this project was to allow students to use professional filming skills and techniques to give people a close look at the Tamsui Region in terms of culture, history, industry and innovation related to people, places and things. The preceding three years were Great Tamsui Figures, Tamsui Food Products and Tamsui Landscapes. This year the topic is Beneficial History, which refers to collecting reliable historical accounts from the local people. The 8 documentaries filmed have a very fresh and untamed perspective that people will really enjoy.” The documentaries consisted of artists, pastimes, cultural services, various innovations, academic institutions, literature and up-close interviews. The students utilized their professional knowledge, putting together stories of heritage for 8 months. In addition to receiving training for the film project, they also had to improve their communication skills and understanding of a very different lifestyle. The students did their best to make a personal connection with the participants of their film, becoming the first learners of their documentary experience. Third-year student, Xin-yao Jiang expressed, “It’s really admirable looking into lifestyles filled with such endurance and persistence. For their generation, they used the railroad to go to school, to the country or even visit family. It was much more than transportation, it is its own culture. All of their memories are tied to the railway.”
New Exchange Developments in Shanghai

President Flora Chia-I Chang and Vice President Wan-chin Tai travelled to Shanghai for an exchange at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and sister school East China Normal University (ECNU) from May 16-17. On May 17 President of SJTU, Jie Zhang welcomed the TKU representatives personally and both parties shared concepts of university governing methods and practical implications of policies. In addition, they planned student exchanges, signing an agreement to send 10 students for international study per year. President of ECNU, Jun Chen, met with the TKU delegation and they decided to bring their relationship into a more intricate form of cooperation. President Chang met with exchange student Taiwanese exchange students currently studying at ECNU for insight to carry out future exchanges. SJTU was founded in 1896 initially given the title Chiao Tung University. Its many academic achievements has given it a prestigious reputation, ranking it as 4th among universities in China.ECNU was founded in 1951 and has been ranked in the top 3 in mainland China of regular universities. TKU and ECNU became sister universities in 2003.
Information and Communication Week Display

Have you wanted to try a new restaurant or shopping place, but were unable to find the location due to heavy rain? How do we find our way around a new area when there are so many distracting factors that can occur? Tamkang University’s 7 departments related to information and communication have been researching ways to make life more convenient for everyone. They aim to share their experience and information they’ve studied including mass data analysis, cloud operations, cultural innovation and smart technology to make things even simpler for the average consumer. On May 18 (Thur) in the “2016 Information and Communication Week Associate Display” was held in the Student Activity Center. Director of the Department of Information and Communication, Chin-hwa Kuo, expressed, “The event contained a collection of interconnected enterprises and products online including information related to transport, operations, medical needs, smart tech environments, personal and social services. The seven departments: Information Engineering, Information and Broadcasting, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Information Management, Educational Technology and Information Innovation and Technology shared information of the local enterprises through multiple forms of media including digital content, apps, cloud, interconnected web networks and mass data analysis to enlighten participants of the continual developing technical methods, business management practices and innovative trends of development. The Information and Communication Week display consisted of 28 competing teams and 34 displays of 5 companies. One such display, “Umbrella Pirate Installation,” was organized by team captain, Ya-kang Zhang, who expressed, “We used the Arduino bluetooth software to allow users to find their interests through using Easy Traveler and Google Maps. It helps them make a clear itinerary, find locations easily and even parking when visibility is an issues.”
Innovation Meets Culture for Liberal Arts Week

The College of Liberal Arts’ Department of Information and Communication, Chinese Literature, History, Information and Library Science and Mass Communication held the 35th Annual Liberal Arts Week starting from May 16. Vice President of Academic Affairs, Huan-chao Keh, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts,Sinn-cheng Lin, Dean of the College of Science, Zi-cong Zhou, Dean of the College of Engineering, Chii-dong Ho, Dean of the College of Business and Management, Chien-liang Chiu and Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Literature, Hsiao-chuan Chen, cut the ceremonial ribbon together, officially setting the event in action. Vice President Keh expressed during his opening statement, “The current age of technology is changing our learning environment on the daily basis. The College of Liberal Arts is taking advantage of the e-writing programs and will thoroughly implement and display the achievements of research and study.” Vice President Keh anticipates that the five departments of the College of Liberal Arts will blend technological education and culture to renew the spirit of innovation. Dean Lin gave his blessing for Liberal Arts Week while confirming the success of the blend of tradition with modern age concepts. Liberal Arts Week consisted of displaying the 5 departments’ professional, innovative and industrial achievements: the Department of Chinese showcased the children’s literature that taught professional knowledge and services as well as poems and drawings; the Department of History introduced the impact of Alexander the Great and Greek culture; the Department of Information and Library Science displayed digital designs and study methods; the Department of Mass Communication gave a detailed account of student achievements and performance; and the Department of Information and Communication put forth innovative digital academic programs and results.
The People, Culture and Science Education- International View Project

Tamsui is a location that is thriving with history, trade and culture. Tradition and heritage are the trademark of this New Taipei City area. In 2002, the government titled it as a “Potential World Heritage Site in Taiwan.” Tamsui along with other locations that have earned this esteemed title have attracted lots of tourist attention in the last 10 years, offering a new experience for visitors. In order to give feedback to the Tamsui community while bringing local resources to campuses and spreading cultural knowledge to students, the Ministry of Education has implemented the “People, Culture and Science Education- International View Project.” This plan has already awarded subsidies leading to the development of sending a science education vehicle to isolated areas around Taiwan. It also lead to the publication of a tourism book of the local region that was translated into six different languages. In order to give the world a closer look at the People, Culture and Science Education project, a forum was held in Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall on May 13. In attendance was Tamsui Official, professors, media personnel and related key figures. Host of the event, Tamkang University’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, Huan-chao Keh, expressed, “This project will involve the College of Liberal Arts, College of Sciences and College of Foreign Languages and Literature providing their unique expertise in promotion of three parts: Cultural Education, Science Education and International Identity. The College of Liberal Arts will utilize the resources of both the campus and the city to create culturally-related academic-industry courses, providing fundamental data through innovative methods. It will also peer deep into the artistic and historical realm of the northern region. In addition, the College of Science will continue to promote science through the use of mobile transport to teach knowledge in the more isolated areas. Lastly, the College of Foreign Languages and Literature will use 6 languages in the promotion of new courses related to communication skills and translation.”
Born to Be Wild Graduation Display

News stories have really picked up in intensity both inside and outside of Taiwan in the last few years. There are stories of drug-related issues, kidnappings, terrorist organizations, stabbings and more. Senior students of the Department of Mass Communication have selected these intense stories as the theme for their graduation achievement display that took place from May 6-8 at the Song Shan Cultural Park. On May 10 the display will be brought to Tamkang University’s Black Swan Exhibition Hall. The theme has been titled “Born to be Wild.” It refers to an ideal of Tamkang University’s 30 years of collecting data for news that is connected and unbiased. Event Organizer of the graduation achievement display, Lo Tsai, expressed, “The title of this event points to the fact that we will not be restrained as we seek to give a continual stream of media that impacts our lives. In step with the operations of the Cultural Park’s Campus Connection, we’ve gathered a versatile surplus of achievements to share with the rest of the world. It consists of awards given for filming, editing and telling of stories that have better helped us face issues of modern society.” In recent years the Taiwanese community has becoming increasingly uneasy. On the news there is a constant stream related to drug incidents and drug abuse. Statistics point out that 1 in every 100 persons is a drug abuser. 6 students of the Department of Mass Communication: Jia-ying Hu, Qi-hua Zhang, Qi-ting Cent, Xin-yan Liu Yi-ru Chen and Feng-shi Lin have made their documentary titled “Embrace” to enlighten people on the dangers of a lifestyle involving drugs. Their project, in addition to works of other diligent students of the department will make for an exciting and informative academic display.
Educational Science All Around Taiwan

In order to raise knowledge regarding science in Taiwan, the Ministry of Science and Technology is adopting a strategic approach, promoting innovation into educational science. For the sake of this objective, from May to June of 2016 a series of 10 events will be held in various places in Taiwan for what is being deemed as “People’s Science Week.” The plan consists of TKU and 15 other academic institutions in cooperation with the Taiwan Railway in order to smoothly and efficiently pass the knowledge of science around the entire island. The train began its journey starting from Taipei on May 3 and is estimated to return within 4 days. Tamkang University’s College of Science was responsible for the portion of activities that took place at Banqiao Station; beginning with a warm invigorating welcome while providing scientific performances in both the station as well as the passenger cars. Director of the Center of Science Education, Chang-bo Wang, expressed, “People’s Science Week began at the beginning of April, holding events to promote science to the many remote areas of Taiwan. By way of the train, we will be able to make a trip from Ban Qiao, Tao Yuan, Xin Zhu, Miao Li, Tai chung, Zhang Hua, Nan Tou, Yun Lin, Jia Yi, Tainan City, Kao Hsiung, Ping Dong, Tai Dong, Hua Lian, Yi Lan and Ji Long. It’s estimated that it will return to Taipei on May 6.”
Electronic Stream Graduation Display

There are so many privileges that become easily overlooked because we a born with them. Gifts such as sight, hearing: walking or talking, are all sensations that many people are born without. How would you explain sound to someone who has never heard before? Four graduating students have taken it upon themselves to create a new method of “listening” that would allow the hearing impaired to “sense” sounds visually. Students of Tamkang University’s Department of Information and Communication: Guan-yu Chen, Xuan-ting Zhang, Ding-yi Chen and Fan-xiu Lin make up the graduation team “Awakening” and have been working on a project that would allow people to see sounds since Oct. of last year. Team captain, Fan-xiu Lin, expressed, “We’ve been working with the teachers and students of the Taipei School of the Hearing Impaired for this activity. We have been interacting with the students while using different media platforms to better understand how they would imagine sounds visually and brought a variety of instruments and tools to assist us.” Initially, Awakening discovered that many of the students were unwilling to participate in certain activities so they had to be very patient in their communication. The group used MV and Line to illustrate sign language while explaining song lyrics and asking the feelings of participants at particular points. Finding that often times sign language moved too quickly to capture the intended feeling, they used pop up visuals during the video in order to enhance the visual effects. Fan-xiu Lin expressed that the project was very rewarding and it was an honor to make new friends. The encounter was filmed and made into a documentary that was later displayed at the Electronic Stream Graduation Gallery. Director of the Department of Information and Communication, Chien-yu Sun, expressed, “The graduation activity display was held from Apr. 25 to Apr. 29 and was themed Electronic Stream. We wanted to encourage students to use innovative forms of broadcasting and media regarding every aspect of life in order to express new ideas and concepts.”
Mainland Chinese Alumni Conference

Currently Tamkang University has developed a significant foundation in terms of Mainland Chinese Alumni Organizations: Guangdong, Huadong, Huabei, Macau and Xiamen. In order to keep relations tightly-knitted in southern China, President Flora Chia-I Chang was invited to attend a banquet regarding the Huanan Alumni Association Conference from Apr. 24-26. She brought a delegation that included Vice President of Administration, Yi-jen Hu and Executive Director of the Office of Alumni Services and Resources Development, Chun-young Perng. Chun-young Perng expressed, “This type of activity is really great for deepening roots and expanding resources for all university members. It’s my hope that TKU alumni continue to help each other as we spread the spirit of the university around the globe.” The evening consisted of alumni leaders such as President of TKU Alumni Association Huabei, Guo-dong Yang; President of TKU Alumni Association Huadong, Su-hua Hong; President of TKU Alumni Association Hong Kong, Ya-kam Yip; President of TKU Alumni Association of Macau, Jia-yin Zhang and the Alumni Association of Malaysia, totalling to 70 honored guests. During the event a total of 1,680,000 NT was contributed towards the construction of the Shou Chien International Conference Center.
When Shakespeare Met Cervantes

The Chueh-sheng Memorial Library in cooperation with the College of Foreign Languages and LIterature configured the second floor into a book display themed “When Shakespeare Met Cervantes” for World Book and Copyright Day (Apr. 23). Not only does the display showcase literature of the two artists, it also consists of studies related to places that the two artists had traveled to including Italy, Denmark, Rome, Balkans and other related themes of literature, culture, travel and history. Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Literature, Hsiao-chuan Chen, expressed, “It’s already been 400 years since these great artists have passed. The Department of English and the Department of Spanish collaborated to let young learners see these important historical works with fresh eyes to broaden their horizons.” The official opening of the display took place on Apr. 25 at noon in the Chueh-sheng Memorial Library. English treats and tea were served along with Spanish cookies, juice-wine and other delicacies. Hsiao-chuan Chen expressed, “The works of these two artists has forever impacted the shape of the world.” Professors of the Department of Spanish and English held discussions related to translations, food, film and literature of the two artists as participants went deep into their exploration of the art world. One participant, student of the Department of Japanese, Qiao-yu Lai, expressed, “It’s great that TKU would hold this exhibit. It really helps inspire creativity.”
